There is never a day in my life when i don’t think of trying any new restaurant or food outlet in Mumbai. Today I felt like visiting Shri Siddhivinayak Mandir at Prabhadevi since it had been two years due to the pandemic that I hadn’t visited my Bappa. So after paying respects and showering all my love on Bappa and he reciprocating back by showering all his love towards me, I felt hungry (as usual) and one of the best Maharashtrian food joints in Dadar came to my mind. It was our very own Aaswad Upahar & Mithai Gruh which serves authentic Maharashtrian dishes at reasonable prices.
Among a wide variety of Vegetarian Maharashtrian dishes served at Aaswad people just gorge its Misal Pav, Vada Pav, Kothimbir Vadi, Thalipeeth, Piyush & Aam Panna .
The way they serve Vada Pav makes it more interesting to look at. I was figuring out for 2 minutes as to how did they fit it in.
When you are hungry you can’t wait for that perfect picture and the delicious aroma just transports you to another world. As soon as the misal pav arrrived i just started hogging. I thought the Vadapav would come first but they served this first and the Misal was yummmmm…..
Not too spicy not too mild, perfectly balanced spices and unmatchable taste. Their Misal Pav is something you can’t miss at all.
No no…I was not trying to shapen the Vadapav in some sort of map, I was just tasting it from different angles with chutney, with khurchan, without any add-on from every nook and corner of it.
“इस मिसल की कोई मिसाल नहीं” and it truly stands on this saying, absolutely no match of this Misal.
Aam Panna is something you can enjoy only in Summers, however they serve it all year around and one sip of this elaichi/ cardamom enriched drink is enough to tickle your senses and get refreshed after a tiring day. One glass won’t be enough, trust me.
The first thing that catches your eye is this colourful yet our very own humble blackboard (which reminds you of your school days ) where you can see the day’s speciality served by Aaswad Restaurant which makes it easier for you to choose from the menu when placing your order.
Phetas/Pagdis/ Turbans whatever you call them – but these have been and will always be an integral part of the Marathi art and culture. And the way it is kept here only enhances the beauty and ambience of this food joint.
P.S.: This is upstairs on 1st floor.
The nathani/nose ring, diyas, wood work and the seal who we all are familiar with gives you a real feel of the Maratha lifestyle and pride.
On weekends there is just no place to sit and you may have to wait a few minutes before you get your seat.
People from all classes and even abroad can’t stop themselves from gorging on the tantalizing dishes served at Aaswad Upahar & Mithai Gruh. The best part about this place is the taste of food served here which hasn’t changed since many many years.
